Must be patient

Another ART visit today and things are still progressing in the land of the hip injury. I still have tightness in the right hip flexors that I am aware of when I run and walk, but beyond that I feel great. When my chiro checked my range of motion today for my hip flexors, he estimated my right side at about 50 degrees and my left at about 70 degrees. He did say I am pretty flexible since 50 degrees is considered normal, but not necessarily normal for me. So we are continuing to attack that right psoas and rectus femoris and also the left glute med (where the pain originally started). He mentioned that it could take up to a year for me to feel fully recovered (so far I have been doing ART for 8 wks) and I will require maintenance visits during that time to make sure that my psoas doesn't revert back to dysfunctional. It was good to hear a time line for this type of injury so that I can mentally prepare and not get discouraged.

So in addition to learning a big test of patience with this injury, my experiment with MAF running is teaching me some serious patience. I ran on the treadmill at the YMCA on Tuesday and it was a bit discouraging to run paces that I don't think I have ever run in my life. I sometimes ask myself if I should be running or walking at these paces?! I keep reminding myself that Mark Allen called this the "Patience Phase" for a reason and that I bet a lot of people would quit this, since running so slow isn't much fun. But I am going to keep at it. There is no rush. My new focus is just to stay healthy and have fun.

There is a reason most people don't stick with the MAF stuff. It sucks in the beginning! Keep in mind the more volume you can do at that HR the faster you will see improvement. I have been running 30-55 miles/week, mostly MAF but some of it is faster now and have dropped ~90 seconds/mile off my original pace at the same HR.
